Solving Multi-Step Equations-

(Distributive Property & Combining Like Terms)

Video Tutorial --> Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms

Example:                                             5x - 5(2x - 8) = 80

Step 1: Rewrite expression using Distributive Property          5x - 5(2x - 8) = 80  -->   -5 times 2x =-10x

                   Distribute -5 times 2x and -5 times -8                                                                                             -5 times -8 = 40

Step 2: Combine like terms                                                         5x - 10x + 40 = 80  -->  5x and -10x = -5x

                  5x and -10x can be combined.

Step 3: Add or Subtract (Cancel the Constant)                                -5x + 40 = 80   -->      80 - 40 = 40

            Since the constant is +40, we will subtract 40 to cancel it out.

Step 4: Divide or Multiply (Cancel the Coefficient)                                  -5x = 40         -->  40 divided by -5 = -8

              Since the X is being "multiplied" by -5, we will divide by -5

                                                                                                                                     x = -8
